Online renewal generally requires the license plate number, the last five digits of the VIN or HIN, and payment information. Insurance and any required smog certification must be on file. Your notice may list additional requirements.
California DMV generally uses the Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227). You’ll typically need identification, the plate number, and the last five digits of the VIN or HIN. The exact process can depend on liens and ownership status.
Financial responsibility is required for vehicles operated or parked on California roads. DMV can suspend registration if it does not receive proof of insurance. Trailers and some other vehicle types may be treated differently.
Smog inspections are often required for registration or renewal, with exceptions based on vehicle type, age, fuel, and transaction. Follow the wording on your renewal notice, including any requirement to use a STAR station.
Both parties should complete the applicable title and transfer documents, report the sale or transfer, and meet DMV deadlines. Fees, smog certification, odometer disclosure, or a bill of sale may apply depending on the vehicle.
A qualifying boat or vessel must be registered, but its trailer is registered separately. Motorized vessels of any size and sailboats over eight feet generally require California registration unless an exemption applies.
PNO is for a vehicle that will not be driven, towed, stored, or parked on public roads for the registration year. Filing and fees must be completed by DMV deadlines to avoid penalties.
PYR lets certain commercial vehicles operate for one or more months of a registration year. Eligibility, operating weight, fees, and documentation are transaction-specific.
